Movement and Transportation of Alpacas

Introduction:

Livestock for exhibition, production or companion purposes will need to check with each state to determine specific requirements for moving alpacas into another state and back into the state of residence.

One of the most important factors for successful movement of livestock is the maintenance of animal health through efficient and humane handling during transport.

Depending on the species involved, state and or federal agencies have jurisdiction over the transportation of wildlife and livestock. Please note that the state receiving the animals is the one that sets the entry requirements. Also, in some states a transport permit maybe required from the state agency.

For information concerning state regulations, contact the Office of the State Veterinarian in your state or the state(s) to or through which the alpaca will be transported. The federal agency APHIS (Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service) maintains a listing of State Veterinarian contacts in addition to their own information. The APHIS site is used by AOBA to assist members in locating transport and health requirement information.
